BBUS SERVICE STATUS (EXPLAINED)

The BBUS Service Page will attempt to inform the user of the status of services on cardinal.  There are 4 levels of Statuses on BBUS:

Condition GREEN:  This Status indicates all services are online and functional, without any restrictions.  If there were a restriction, it would be noted on the condition page,  and would either be a Server Status, or a Service Status.

Condition ORANGE:  This Status indicates that maintainance may be being done on the server.  During this status, the server would be online and accepting connections, but the BBUS Admins may be working on some task such as a backup of files, or maintaining the daemons, or any services or configurations.  There may or may not be times when a BBUS admin may have to reboot the server in order to complete the work that they are doing.  If a restart is necessary, We will attempt to give you a period of time to warn you that the server is going DOWN for Reboot:  We will attempt to give users 5-10 minutes for them to logoff before work commences or rebooting occurs.  There also may be times when we will NOT be able to give you a warning, and if this is the case, it would say that the server is going DOWN for Reboot NOW – Once the reboot is complete, users may or may not be able to connect back to the server, but most times, you may connect after the reboot cycle completes.

Condition YELLOW:  This Status indicates that there may be a problem with the system, which is being worked on by BBUS Admins.  During this Status, the server may be online and accepting connections, but this condition is usually indicative of a problem with the server, or maybe a service.  (For Example, if we determine that a process is causing the server to eat up disk space, or if a service is not functioning or is STOPPED, we may throw a Condition Yellow to let you know that we are aware of a problem and are working to correct it as soon as possible).  As with a Condition Orange, There may or may not be times when a BBUS admin may have to reboot the server in order to complete the work that they are doing.

Condition RED: This Status indicates that there is reason to believe that we may have to either do a system shutdown (shutdown to a halt) or that we have reason to bellieve that a dangerous condition exists that would either do harm to computer equipment, modems, routers, PC’s or the server.  Condition RED is usually used when we either have a predicted, weather-related event(s), or are experiencing the weather event(s) This could be Wind, Rain, Snow, High Wind, Flooding, etc.  During a Condition RED:  The server would be powered DOWN either before severe weather arrives or as soon as possible after it arrives.  During a Condition RED:  The server will remain OFF/DOWN until we are sure that the severe weather passes, or that the dangerous condition that caused the Condition RED has been corrected, and the server can be restarted.

When services (such as ssh, sftp, ftp, etc) are affected, then we would also be giving updated status on what service(s) are affected, and an ETA to possible service restart or service reload (if we have to edit config files or make a change to a package, then we would post them in the services status section.  We would also let you know whether the service is ON (started) or OFF (stopped).  When we have to mess around with services or daemons, it is important to keep up on this, because having the most up to date software packages ensures that we can be sure that we will not have any security issues.  If we have to do something to a service, it will be listed to let users know what is going on, and if possible, an ETA to a restart.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding this page, please send Brian a message and he will get back to you as soon as possible.
